On An Old Path

This past holiday I received “Classical Drawing Atelier” by Juliette Aristides as a gift from my wife. Partly due to me bugging her constantly about it and her knowing my love and fascination of classical art. This book now completes my set of the current classical instructional series. If anyone is interested in truly learning the classical style of art I highly recommend these books!

Now, I set about reading it almost instantly, and found the pages of insight, knowledge, and art intoxicating. But there was one thing that would play on my mind for days. She described the classical procedure of Master Copy Drawing, which is exactly what it sounds like, copying drawing from old masters. This technique not only hones your ability to draw but teaches you the concepts and processes of great artists. The reason this would stand out for me is that when I was about 9 years old I taught myself how to draw by copying all the coloring and comic books I could get my hands on. This introduction to art was later forgotten and replaced with the many art classes I had taken through the years that stretched on. Yet, this book on classical drawing breathed life into that long forgotten memory and a new need to practice my skill at master copy drawing. A few days later, thanks to Amazon, I had in my hands several Dover Art Library books filled with plates of drawings and was ready to start.

I will be posting these drawing up on my blog under the category of Master Copy Drawings. Hope you enjoy!
